Applications open for CER’s 2025 edition of the Rights & Remedies Course for Environmental Justice Activists

11 June 2025 at 4:47 pm

The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) has announced that nominations and applications are now open for the highly anticipated 2025 Rights and Remedies Course for environmental justice activists (R&R). For the first time, this transformative course will take place in Muldersdrift, Gauteng and will run from 22 September to 11 October 2025.

Under the theme of Building a Responsive Environmental Justice Movement the 2025 R&R course has been designed to explore the pivotal role of activism in protecting the environment. Participants will delve into the challenges and opportunities faced by activists as they exercise their agency, acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to become powerful forces for change.

The R&R Course for environmental justice activists welcomes participants from community-based organisations, civil society, and individuals in the environmental and climate justice movement, with a particular emphasis on engaging diverse communities and fostering gender equality.

The R&R has produced over 100 environmental activist graduates since its inception in 2017. Alumni network activists who have completed the programme have been empowered with the necessary skills to use the law to defend their environment, in an effort to protect it for future generations.

“This year’s edition of R&R brings exciting new tools and strategies designed to capacitate the next generation of environmental justice activists in South Africa” says CER Attorney, Danjelle Midgley. “The R&R course empowers activists to bring themselves and their experiences to the environmental justice movement, to participate in decisions affecting their lives and ultimately shape it into a stronger and more resilient sector of our society.”

CER invites community members who share a strong commitment to environmental justice and climate change to apply. This course aims to deepen communities’ understanding of the intersection between law and activism.

To apply or nominate a deserving candidate for the R&R Course, potential candidates are invited to access and download the nomination form: R&R Application form.

The deadline for submissions is 11 July 2025.

By attending this course, individuals will gain valuable insights into effective activism strategies and develop a comprehensive understanding of the various legal remedies available within South African law.
